Travel in Scotland

Scotland is definitely one of my favourite countries. A beautiful landscape, friendly peoples and not to forget the whisky!

I go to Scotland regularly. On one hand, I participate since many years in Thistlecamps organised by the National Trust for Scotland on one of its estates throughout the country. These are work camps, where one volunteers to take part in maintenance and conservancy work on the estates.
Volunteer work on the Thistle camps include tasks such as fencing, footpath maintenance and the clearance of unwanted vegetation such as Rhododendron. This work can be hard and strenuous, but hard manual work in the fresh air makes  a healthy exercise and a welcome break from office life. The pictures featured give an overview of such activities.

Fencing work. The aim of these fences is to keep livestock out of certain areas, in order to allow regeneration of specific vegetation (Burg, Isle of Mull, 1997)

Foothpath improvement: a "cross-drain" as it is known in the footpath trade. This canalises small burns, in order to keep the path proper dry and pleasant to walk on. (Burg, 1999)

Rhododendron Ponticum is an invasive plant overwhelming everything and displacing native vegetation. "Rhodie-bashing" is thus a popular activity on Thistle Camps. This is the result...

Furthermore, I enjoy the wild open country that one can still find in the Highlands of Scotland. To this effect, I undertake long walking tours in the wilderness.
