Power barrow

StonesArriving at the Morvich Outdoor Centre after a 60-mile walk from Spean Bridge, but not long after the two NTS minibuses carrying the respectively Kintail and Balmacara crews. A group of participants from all over the UK, coming from all places from Essex to East Kilbride, under command of the trusted leaders Jon and Marcus, and the local rangers Willie and Rule, joined for a work camp under splendid atmospheric conditions, a complete contrast with the week before.

pathThe first days of the work week were devoted to pathwork: improving the path to the Falls of Glomach. The first bit of it, so no long walk-in was needed. The usual jobs: moving big stones around, hauling tons of gravel with the power barrow, and getting suitable material from the burn or the borrowing pit.

groupThistlecamps are also major social events, with people from different background uniting in a good spirit. The preparation of the communal meals, with the haggis of course, and the evening music sessions (See video below)!

groupOn the day off, some were courageous enough to bag a Munro whileas most took a lazy tourist approach to the Glenelg Brochs, the turntable ferry to Skye, for the Elgol boat trip to Loch Coruisk, with all uniting for an evening meal at Plockton.

The whole thing thing can be summarized quite well through Jackie's interpretation below:

Food for the soul, by Jackie Kemp

Must get away from all that rot,
From colleagues saying “you’re going to do what ??!!!!”
To Morvich basecamp to seek some shelter
From life & city’s helter skelter

At Balmacara life’s a beach,
The Kintail pathway is easy reach
Step back in time upon the ferry,
Through Skye to Plockton making merry.

Long blue sky days, the sun it shone
Our highland memories will linger on
Of toil & tales & songs & laughter
To be recalled forever after

We’ve done our bit; it’s been a ball,
I’d like to thank you one & all
For being here to support the trust
Without your help it might go bust

So now we all must head home
Farewell to Glenelg palindrome
Farewell to bonnie hills so craggy
Farewell to friends like Kim & Aggy

But one more thing whilst on my pen
I hope our pathways meet again.

Slainte!
