Arriving at the Morvich Outdoor Centre after a 60-mile walk from Spean Bridge, but not long after the two NTS minibuses carrying the respectively Kintail and Balmacara crews. A group of participants from all over the UK, coming from all places from Essex to East Kilbride, under command of the trusted leaders Jon and Marcus, and the local rangers Willie and Rule, joined for a work camp under splendid atmospheric conditions, a complete contrast with the week before.
The first days of the work week were devoted to pathwork: improving the path to the Falls of Glomach. The first bit of it, so no long walk-in was needed. The usual jobs: moving big stones around, hauling tons of gravel with the power barrow, and getting suitable material from the burn or the borrowing pit.
The second part of the week trees were planted on an enclosure in upper Glen Lichd. Mounds had been made with the digger, good for a few thousand willow, alder and birch to go on. Now just hope that no deer manages to get through the fence...
Thistlecamps are also major social events, with people from different background uniting in a good spirit. The preparation of the communal meals, with the haggis of course, and the evening music sessions (See video below)!
On the day off, some were courageous enough to bag a Munro whileas most took a lazy tourist approach to the Glenelg Brochs, the turntable ferry to Skye, for the Elgol boat trip to Loch Coruisk, with all uniting for an evening meal at Plockton.
The whole thing thing can be summarized quite well through Jackie's interpretation below:
Food for the soul, by Jackie Kemp Must get away from all that rot, At Balmacara life’s a beach, Long blue sky days, the sun it shone We’ve done our bit; it’s been a ball, So now we all must head home But one more thing whilst on my pen Slainte! |
