Spring 2008: Braemar to Fort William

scot2008

After completing the Drum willow-weaving thistlecamp I undertook the 91-mile walk from Braemar to Fort William, through the heart of the Scottish Highlands, crossing two railways but only one main road (the A9) in the process. From Glen Feshie on, this route follows the Rathad nam Meirleach or Thieves' Road, followed by Lochaber cattle thieves raiding Speyside farms.

Variable but generally dry weather, and a difficult terrain with bad or missing paths, snow, slush and bog made this one of the hardest trips I already performed. In spring, one just misses the insects however.

For each day the partial map shows the route as performed, with colour coding of the path expressing the actual walking speed, from slow (2km/h) in red, over yellow and green to blue for fast (6km/h). These indications are very approximate however, and partial maps are fit to page width and thus not all on the same scale.
